We at Appalachian Breastfeeding Network find ourselves at a decisive moment in history—one that is starting the long-awaited process of intentionality. Being intentional in our efforts to fight discrimination and exclusivity is a key component to Appalachian Breastfeeding Network.
We start by authentically recognizing our inability to truly know and experience the world as another does, and we are mindful of the reoccurring and continuing traumas that the lactation and birth world has inflicted on those who are gender non-conforming.
We come to you with a statement of intentionality, not to boast our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, but to put inclusivity into practice. Our work does not stop at a single statement or policy.
This is why we are rebranding one of our key components of Appalachian Breastfeeding Network.
Appalachian Breastfeeding Network’s mission is: to work towards transformation of breastfeeding culture in Appalachia by providing empowerment and education to increase access to care. Therefore, empowerment is a key component to this mission.
Previously, we launched the “Empower Mom Movement”, a social media movement created with the intention not to empower others, but for those so moved by the project to find the empowerment inside of them to challenge their healthcare team when felt as though they are not receiving the care that they deserve. This social media movement was one that was met with accolades and increased participation. Upon deep reflection, we are aware that not everyone who lactates identifies as a “mom” and therefore this movement has become one of exclusivity.
Appalachian Breastfeeding Network would like to publicly announce its rebranding of this project, to our new name “Empowering Parents Project” – where we will focus on not only on mothers, but all parents. Previously, we did not exclude any parent, regardless of lactation status, but we want to be intentional with our efforts today.
The “Empowering Parents Project” is a social media campaign that will focus on breastfeeding, chestfeeding, bodyfeeding, pumping, bottle feeding, and exclusively formula feeding parents. We believe ALL parents deserve to tap into their empowerment potential. We will post various intentional messages – some tailored to those who are lactating, and some tailored to all.
In addition, Appalachian Breastfeeding Network Board and Staff will participate in an intensive Inclusivity Training – one that we believe every organization needs to participate in and reflect on. In the coming months, our Equity Committee will begin work on auditing any and all of Appalachian Breastfeeding Network’s presence, activities, and policies to reflect our dedication to providing our initiatives to all.
In many cases, our “rebranding” will not exclude mothers or motherhood, but instead extend our intentionality to include everyone, as our ethical and moral standards believe that we should protect all identities.
We will continue to self-reflect and self-critique our own set of implicit and explicit biases as individuals and as an organization, while recognizing the need for equitable access to the lactation field in general.
We have a lot of work to do and we hope you will join us in becoming more intentional with our inner and outward workings.
In solidarity,
Appalachian Breastfeeding Network
