Appalachian Breastfeeding Network is seeking motivated individuals to join us as a board member! The form below must be completed by October 15, 2024 to be nominated. Individuals would be board members after election starting November 1, 2024.

Responsibilities include:
Shared Responsibilities – All Board Members
All Board Members are required to be members of Appalachian Breastfeeding Network, full membership preferred. All Board Members are encouraged to attend all ABN meetings, however, for the remainder of this document “required” is defined as “required to make an attempt.” All Board Members are expected to maintain a positive outlook on Appalachian Breastfeeding Network, especially when representing the organization. All Board Members are expected to uphold the Policy and Procedure Handbook, with an emphasis on the Code of Conduct policy and the Code of Ethics policy. All Board Members should make every effort to uphold their position in an upstanding manner to represent Appalachian Breastfeeding Network well. All board members are responsible for seeking and obtaining twenty (20) paid memberships each year for a total of $400 in membership dues to the organization.
President (3-year term)
Responsibilities of the President
The President is responsible for overseeing Appalachian Breastfeeding Network’s organizational activities. The President will be expected to be present at all executive board meetings and help guide initial membership meetings in each state, whether by telephone, video conference, or in person. It is the responsibility of the President to train the Representatives in each state to run meetings on their own. The President is able to appoint committee heads and members that may arise from special committees formed, subject to a 2/3 majority vote of the executive board. The President will take special interest in the organization’s finances, working specifically with the Treasurer throughout the term. The President has the general power of supervision and management of the organization as it pertains to this policy. The President is to be mindful of ABN as an organization when attending public events where ABN is represented. The President must be knowledgeable of the organization’s Bylaws, Policy and Procedure Handbook, and Articles of Incorporation. The President must sign and maintain all required policies in the Policy and Procedure Handbook. The President must be a member of Appalachian Breastfeeding Network for at least one (1) year at time of election and maintain membership throughout the term.
Fundraising
The President is required to continually work on fundraising with an individual minimum goal of $500 per year for Appalachian Breastfeeding Network, making sure to follow ABN’s Donation and Code of Ethics policies.
Meetings
The President is responsible for setting up board meetings, and membership meetings in the respective state of residence. During a President’s term, the President takes the position of Representative in their residing state. (i.e. President residing in Ohio will be the Ohio ABN Representative) An alternate or regional rep can still be considered in the President’s residing state. The President is responsible for creating an agenda for the board meetings. The President will also officiate a monthly conference call for all Regional Representatives and other board members to attend monthly, which is mandatory.
Communication
It is the responsibility of the President to continue communication with all board, committee, or special staff members on ABN happenings, upcoming events, current initiatives, or any ABN activity pertinent to the knowledge of an ABN board, committee, or staff member. The President will work closely with the Membership and Publicity Chairs in an effort to grow the organization and maintain current membership and activity attendance. The President will maintain communication with regional, cultural, state, national, and international organizations interested in the Appalachian region.
Annual Conference
The President is required to give an opening statement and an update on Appalachian Breastfeeding Network at ABN’s Annual Conference. The ABN President is also responsible for spearheading the conference each year, taking chair of the ABN Conference Committee.
Reports
The President can request and receive reports from any board members at any time as needed. Board members and other officers should send reports to the President on a timely basis mutually agreed upon.

If unable to complete the duties of President due to illness, unexpected absence, family emergencies, or other qualifying event acceptable to the rest of the board, the Vice President will assume the duties of President until the President is able to resume the duties set out in this policy.
Vice President (3-year term)
Responsibilities of the Vice President
The Vice President assumes the joint responsibility of the policy of President and will share the tasks laid out in the President policy in a mutually agreed manner. If the President is unable to complete the duties of President due to illness, unexpected absence, family emergencies, or other qualifying event acceptable to the rest of the board, the Vice President will assume the duties of President until the President is able to resume the duties set out in this policy. The Vice President is to be mindful of ABN as an organization when attending public events where ABN is represented. The Vice President must sign and maintain all required policies in the Policy and Procedure Handbook. The Vice President must be a member of Appalachian Breastfeeding Network for at least one (1) year at time of election and maintain membership throughout the term.

Treasurer (3-year term)
Responsibilities of a Treasurer
The Treasurer is responsible for receiving and dispersing funds for the organization. He or she manages and reports for the organization’s finances while maintaining loyalty and obedience while honoring the organization's mission. The treasurer shall respect confidentiality and being mindful of the public's trust.
The Treasurer carries out the responsibilities of a member of the Board of Directors. Assists in the preparation of the budget, monitors the budget and ensures the Board’s financial policies are being followed. Reports to the Board of Directors and general membership on finances. Prepares any required financial reporting forms, maintains all bank accounts and oversees all financial transactions. The Treasurer is to be mindful of ABN as an organization when attending public events where ABN is represented. The Treasurer must sign and maintain all required policies in the Policy and Procedure Handbook. The Treasurer must be a member of Appalachian Breastfeeding Network for at least one (1) year at the time of election and maintain membership throughout the term.

The treasurer is required to have knowledge of nonprofit accounting practices, nonprofit tax laws and fiscal record-keeping.
Accounts and Expenditures
His or her signature should appear on all checks of the organization with the second signature from any of the board’s other directors or staff with signing authority. Check details of credit card (s) or spending authorization and ensure the return of outstanding check books or cards. Organize for a detailed briefing from the outgoing treasurer detailing any spending commitments or incoming not included in budget papers. Prepare a timeline of upcoming payments and dates when the bills (i.e. insurance, rent etc.) are due.
Annual Budget
Treasurer will submit an annual budget that identifies how much money the organization requires to operate during the upcoming year. The budget is to include sources of revenue and anticipated expenses. The budget is submitted to the Board for approval at the beginning of the fiscal year by the treasurer. Throughout the year the treasurer tracks year-to-date income and revenues, reports variances and alerts the Board of potential problems. The Treasurer is responsible for maintaining up to date tax filings and tax forms throughout each year.
Reports
The treasurer prepares reports to the board detailing income, expenditures and asset values. The treasurer presents a financial report at each board meeting and also prepares and presents the annual financial and audit report to the board. Board officers and members rely on financial reports to guide decisions in all areas of governance. The treasurer prepares special financial reports addressing proposed plans for large expenditures.
Secretary (3-year term)
Secretary Responsibilities
The Secretary is responsible for taking minutes at the each of the board’s monthly meetings, compiling minutes into a draft for a final check from the president to send out while maintaining loyalty and obedience while honoring the organization's mission. The secretary shall respect confidentiality and being mindful of the public's trust.

Membership Chair (3-year term)
Responsibilities
The individual that holds the Membership Chair position has many responsibilities. These include, but are not limited to, the following: maintain the most up to date records of active, paid, and supporting members, monitoring the software for new members and adding them to the corresponding membership lists. The Membership Chair will also be responsible for sending out e-mails to members, signing up new members at events and keeping contact with State Representatives. The Membership Chair is also required to attend all monthly meetings and any conferences. The Membership Chair is to be mindful of ABN as an organization when attending public events where ABN is represented. The Membership Chair must sign and maintain all required policies in the Policy and Procedure Handbook. The Membership Chair must be a member of Appalachian Breastfeeding Network for at least one (1) year at time of election and maintain membership throughout the term.

Equity Committee Chair (3-year term)
Responsibilities
The individual that holds the Equity Committee Chair position has many responsibilities. These include managing and upkeeping all areas conducted by the equity committee. This includes but is not limited to: forming an equity committee dedicated to the equitable running of Appalachian Breastfeeding Network. The Equity Committee Chair is also required to attend all monthly meetings and any conferences and act as the board liaison between the equity committee and the executive board. The Equity Committee Chair is to be mindful of ABN as an organization when attending public events where ABN is represented. The Equity Committee Chair must sign and maintain all required policies in the Policy and Procedure Handbook. The Equity Committee Chair must be a member of Appalachian Breastfeeding Network for at least one (1) year at time of election and maintain membership throughout the term.

Publicity Chair and Media Chair (1-year term)
Responsibilities of Publicity Chair and Media Chair
The Publicity Chair and Media Chair are responsible for all Appalachian Breastfeeding Network activity publicity which includes but is not limited to: current initiatives, conferences, meetings, and other ABN happenings set forth by the President. The Publicity Chair and Media Chair will seek approval of all publicity materials, with the exception of digital and social media posts, to be voted on by 2/3 of the Executive Board. The Publicity Chair and Media Chair will maintain a positive space through social media, e-mail, and other avenues of publicity. ABN prefers this candidate be proficient with computers, be able to create flyers/posters, and review materials to make our organization inclusive in all publicity measures. The Publicity Chair and Media Chair is to be mindful of ABN as an organization when attending public events where ABN is represented. The Publicity Chair and Media Chair must sign and maintain all required policies in the Policy and Procedure Handbook. The Publicity Chair and Media Chair must be a member of Appalachian Breastfeeding Network at time of election and maintain membership throughout the term.

Librarian (1-year term)
Responsibilities of Librarian
The Librarian is responsible for all Appalachian Breastfeeding Network books/materials which includes but is not limited to: books, newsletters, magazines, video files, audio files, etc. The Librarian will hold, ship, and keep all materials accounted for with an up to date list, sent to the executive board upon any change. The Librarian will communicate effectively with the Executive Board, ABN members who request materials, and the ABN website editor to keep all materials up to date. The Librarian must communicate efficiently with the Treasurer for any reimbursement of shipping costs incurred. ABN prefers this candidate be proficient with computers, be able to create a database of materials, and ship items in a quick, seamless manner. The Librarian is to be mindful of ABN as an organization when attending public events where ABN is represented. The Librarian must sign and maintain all required policies in the Policy and Procedure Handbook. The Librarian must be a member of Appalachian Breastfeeding Network at time of election and maintain membership throughout the term.

Continuing Education Coordinator (1-year term)
Responsibilities of Continuing Education Coordinator:
The Continuing Education Coordinator is responsible for all Appalachian Breastfeeding Network continuing education applications which includes but is not limited to: speaker objectives, speaker disclosures, flyers for speaker’s event, speaker’s post-test evaluation, and any other documents IBLCE or the Ohio League of Nursing needs to verify the topic to approve the credit. The Continuing Education Coordinator will be in close contact with the Speaker Coordinator or President to keep ABN updated on the status of any CE application. The Continuing Education Coordinator will communicate effectively with the Executive Board, ABN speakers, and the ABN website editor to keep all educational events up to date. The Continuing Education Coordinator must communicate efficiently with the Treasurer for any reimbursement of application costs incurred. ABN prefers this candidate be proficient with computers, be able to complete an application efficiently, and have great communication skills. The Continuing Education Coordinator is to be mindful of ABN as an organization when attending public events where ABN is represented. The Continuing Education Coordinator must sign and maintain all required policies in the Policy and Procedure Handbook. The Continuing Education Coordinator must be a member of Appalachian Breastfeeding Network at time of election and maintain membership throughout the term.

State Representative (2-year term)
The State Representative is responsible for hosting meetings in the state of representation. States that also have regional representatives will require the State Representative to host a meeting, in person, by telephone, or by video conference, with the regional representatives in the respective state. The State Representative is responsible for notifying the Publicity Chair of any and all happenings the State Representative is aware of in that state. This includes any ABN activities arranged by a State Alternate or a Regional Representative. The State Representative is to be mindful of ABN as an organization when attending public events where ABN is represented. The State Representative must sign and maintain all required policies in the Policy and Procedure Handbook. The State Representative must be a member of Appalachian Breastfeeding Network at time of election and maintain membership throughout the term.

The State Alternate is to be mindful of ABN as an organization when attending public events where ABN is represented. The State Alternate must sign and maintain all required policies in the Policy and Procedure Handbook. The State Alternate must be a member of Appalachian Breastfeeding Network at time of election and maintain membership throughout the term.
If the State Representative is unable to complete the duties of State Representative due to illness, unexpected absence, family emergencies, or other qualifying event acceptable to the rest of the board, the State Alternate will assume the duties of State Representative until the State Representative is able to resume the duties set out in this policy.

Regional Representative Responsibilities
The Regional Representative is responsible for hosting meetings in the region of the state represented. The Regional Representative is responsible for notifying the State Representative and Publicity Chair of any meetings that will be hosted by the Regional Representative. The Regional Representative is to be mindful of ABN as an organization when attending public events where ABN is represented. The Regional Representative must sign and maintain all required policies in the Policy and Procedure Handbook. The Regional Representative must be a member of Appalachian Breastfeeding Network at time of election and maintain membership throughout the term.
